Colonel Robert M. Murphy Plaque

The plaque is located toward the eastern edge of the west side wall of the building, facing toward Rue Murphy.  Plaque

Medal of Honor recipient Robert M. Murphy was the first pathfinder of the 82nd Airborne Division to land in Sainte-Mère-Église on 6 June 1944. He led the mission which marked the drop zone for the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. His work made the liberation of the town possible.

The bronze plaque honoring Murphy features embossed gold text and unit insignia. All text is in English and French. The plaque was placed at the site by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts in October 2009.

In honor of

 

COLONEL ROBERT M. MURPHY

(1924-2008)

 

On 6 June 1944 at 0015 hours

parachuted near Sainte-Mère-Eglise

as the first pathfinder of the 82nd Airborne

Division to land in Normandy.

 

After marking the drop zone for the 505th PIR

he then went on to help liberate this town from

oppression.

 

Dedicated to a great friend of Ste Mere Eglise

a gallant Airborne soldier and

a proud Ancient
