Lt Cary Lewis GRAY

Cary Lewis Gray est originaire de la ville de Bristol à cheval sur les états du Tennessee et de la Virginie. Aprés avoir effectué ses études au "Tennessee high school" ainsi qu'au "King Collage", il se destine à la carrière d'enseignant. Volontaire pour servir dans "l'Air Corps" à la fin 1942, il rejoint l'école d'entrainement de Mariana en Floride, ses bons résultats lui permettront de devenir pilote de chasse.

En Juin 1944, base en Angleterre, Cary L. Gray pilote un chasseur bombardier Republic P47 "Thunderbolt". Le 17 Juin 1944, le 406ème Fighter-Bomber Group, 513ème Fighter-Bomber Squadron effectue une mission de reconnaissance dans le region de Lessay. A 20h30, dans le secteur de Brix a une altitude de 1500 metres, les aviateurs essuient un tir nourri de D.C.A. allemande. La formation d'avions se disperse pour échapper au tir. Le Lieutenant William Cobb entendra Cary L. Gray dire : "Je suis touché !, je suis touche !", mais ne le verra pas. En revanche, le Lieutenant Funk l'a vu sauter on parachute et arriver au sol sans dommage. Ce jour-là, Monsieur Lebunetel effectuait la traite de ses vaches à proximité du lieu du crash, il a bien vu le pilote sauter en parachute mais a su peu après qu'il avait ete fusillé par les Allemands. La brève carrière du Lieutenant Gray se termina sur cette terre de Normandie, il repose désormais au cimetière américain de St Laurent sur Mer auprès de 9000 do ses camarades.

Le 7 Juin 1944 au matin, le Liberty Ship Santa Clara, sous les ordres du Commandant Thomas L. Gray, oncle du pilote, est en face d'Omaha Beach et s'apprete à débarquer 2317 fantassins. Touché par une torpille, le navire sombre rapidement. Le sang-froid et le courage du Commandant Thomas. L. Gray permettent de sauver tout l'équipage et les soldats presents a bord soit au total 2705 hommes. Cet exploit a fait entrer le Commandant Gray dans l'histoire de la Marine americaine.

Wilfred Gray, frère du pilote, a servi comme officier dans la Marine Marchande américaine pendant la seconde guerre mondiale et a participé a des missions de ravitaillement entra los Etats-Unis et Marseille.

Thomas Gray, le deuxième frère du pilote, a servi dans la Marine de Guerre américaine pendant la bataille du Pacifique.

Cary Lewis GRAY was born in Bristol, a town straddling the states of Tennessee and Virginia. After studying in "Tennessee Highschool" and in "King College", he intended to go into teaching. At the end of 1942, he joined the training academy of Mariana, Florida, to serve as a volunteer in the 'Air Corps". His good results allowed him to become a fighter pilot. In June 1944, based in England, Cary Lewis Gray flew a fighter bomber (Republic P 47 "Thunderbolt").

On June the 17th 1944, the 406th Fighter Bomber Group, 513th Fighter Bomber Squadron, carried out a recce over Lessay area. At 8.30 p.m, flying at an altitude of 4500 feet over the Brix region, the pilots suddenly came under a thick line of the German Anti Aircraft Defense. The squadron broke up to avoid it. Lieutenant William Cobb heard Cary L Gray shout "I'm hit. I'm hit" but couldn't see him. On the other hand, Lieutenant Funk saw him bail out and land unscathed.

On the same day, Mr Lebunetel was milking his cows near the crash spot ; he clearly saw the pilot bail out but learnt later that he had been shot by the Germans.

Lieutenant Gray's short career came to an end here in Normandy ; from now on he lies with 9000 of his friends in American cemetery of St Laurent sur Mer.
