On november 1, 1946, a Boeing B17 bomber of the US Air Force went missing along with its eight-man crew during a flight from Naples to Bovingdon.
On July 25, 1947, a patrol from the 99th Alpine Infantry Battalion discovered the remains of the aircraft scattered on the Glaciers and Estelette glaciers. The plane had hit the Aiguille des Glaciers 60 meters below the summit. One of the propellers remained stuck in the rock for several decades.
The crew members and many pieces of debris also trapped in the ice re-emerged in 1972 and 1975 in Italy and in 1979 in France.
The remainings of the crew were repatriated to the United States.

Le 1er novembre 1946, au cours du vol Naples-Bovingdon, un bombardier Boeing B 17 de l'U.S. Air Force avec 8 militaires à bord est porté disparu.
Le 25 juillet 1947, une patrouille du 99ème Bataillon d'Infanterie Alpine découvre des restes de l'appareil dispersés sur le glacier des Glaciers et sur le glacier d'Estelette : l'avion a percuté l'Aiguille des Glaciers 60 m sous le sommet. L'une des hélices est restée fichée dans le rocher plusieurs décennies.
Les membres d'équipage et de nombreux débris emprisonnés dans la glace réapparaissent en 1972 et 1975 en Italie et en 1979 en France.
Les corps des aviateurs ont été rapatriés aux Etats Unis.

Il 25 luglio 1947 una pattuglia del 99° Battaglione di Fanteria Alpina scopre i resti dell'apparecchio dispersi sul Glacier des Glaciers; in seguito ne furono scoperti altri sul Ghiacciaio d'Estelette in Val Veny : l'aereo aveva colpito l'Aiguille des Glaciers 60m sotto la cima. Una delle eliche è rimasta incastrata nella roccia per più decenni.
I membri dell'equipaggio e numerosi resti imprigionati nel ghiaccio riaffiorarono a partire dagli anni 70 sia in Italia che in Francia.
I corpi degli aviatori furono rimpatriati negli Stati Uniti
