When John Henry Hitchcock was born on August 26, 1897, in Massachusetts, his father, Harry, was 20 and his mother, Helen, was 18. He lived in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company G, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action soon after the battle at Chateau Thierry, corrected on December 7, 1918 to killed in action on July 19, 1918. He was the first young man from his district reported as killed in action that time. He is now buried in Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA.
