Ernest D. Wortley entered the military service in Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company E, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He also has a cenotaph in Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeview, Montcalm County, Michigan, USA. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Worthley.
