When Bert D. Pirtle was born on August 11, 1891, in Wahoo, Nebraska, his father, Charles, was 21 and his mother, Jessie, was 25. He had three brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company B, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 in France (at the age of 26) but his current burial place is unknown. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument under the 28th Infantry.
