James E. Carden was born on November 23, 1883. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company B, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 9, 1918 (at the age of 34) and is now buried in Bethel Baptist Cemetery, Norris, Anderson County, Tennessee, USA. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as J A CARDIN.
