Wilbur Thomas was the first soldier of World War I from Cass county to die in battle. He enlisted in U.S. Regular Army October 25, 1916, Logansport, Ind. Sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Transferred to Ft. Houston, Tex.; then to Camp Funston, Kans. Saw service on Mexican Border. Went overseas in June, 1917; assigned to Company C, 28th Infantry, 1st Division. Killed by shrapnel fire July 21, 1918, near Soissons, on Moselle. His remains were returned to Cass county for re-burial in Mount Hope cemetery on 9/24/1921.
