When Walter A. Zahnow was born on August 22, 1897, in Saginaw, Michigan, his father, Gotlieb, was 52 and his mother, Fredericka, was 41. He had two brothers and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company E, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918 but his current burial place is unknown.
