Albert Howard Ostrander was born No. 27, 1896 in the town of Columbus, Columbia County, Wisconsin. He graduated from Columbus high school in June 1914. He entered the University of Wisconsin on Sept. 23, 1917 and it was while at the University that he offered himself to his country as a National Guard on October 15, being sent to Jefferson Barracks (St. Louis), Mo. receiving his training at Camp McArthur, Waco, Texas.

In Feb. 1918 he was sent to Camp Merriott, New Jersey, sent to Brest, France on the transport Covington, landing at Brest, March 4, 1918.

His first combat service began May 14 and 15th in the First Division, Company G. 28th Infantry, in the Cantigny sector at Montdider.

On May 27th his Company G went over the top in the battle of Soisson near Mortefontaine.

He was wounded in this action and was sent to the evacuation hospital at Perresfonds, where he died. He was buried inside the French Civilian Cemetery in that place from which he was disinterred and brought to his home town.

Howard was cited by his division commander Major General Summerall for "Gallantry in Action and Especially Meretorious Services"
