Burton James entered the military service in Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as a Private.
