When John Shelby McQueary was born on January 27, 1900, in Kentucky, his father, James, was 34 and his mother, Nancy, was 34. He had four brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 (at the age of 18) in France and is now buried in New Hope Cemetery, Ella, Adair County, Kentucky, USA.
