When William Byron Long was born on January 3, 1918, in New Cumberland, West Virginia, his father, Frank, was 49 and his mother, Bertha, was 36. He had one son with Olive Kathleen Pugh. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in HQ 2 Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He was Killed in Action on December 21, 1944, at the age of 26 in Belgium and is now buried in New Cumberland Cemetery, New Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia, USA.
