When Lacy Pate was born on February 2, 1923, in Cheraw, South Carolina, his father, James, was 25 and his mother, Rosa, was 24. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in Company G, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division and went overseas on April 10, 1943. He died from his wounds received in battle on January 3, 1945 (at the age of 19) in Belgium. Originally buried at the Henri Chappelle Cemetery in Belgium, Lacy's body was returned to the US in 1947. He is now buried in Old St. Davids Episcopal Church Cemetery, Cheraw, Chesterfield County, South Carolina, USA.
