George William Zengel was born on March 4, 1895, at East Grand Forks, Minn. Before entering service, he was a substitute mail clerk at East Grand Forks. He enlisted in Aug. 1917 at Grand Forks. He was a Pvt in the Machine Gun Co.; stationed at camp Greene No Car.; was transferred to Co A 2nd M. G. Bn, 1st Div; promoted to 1st Class Pvt; embarked on the Leviathan, Dec 16, 1917 and arrived at Liverpool Dec 25, 1917. Went into action Jan 23 1918 on the firing line with the 1st Div, where he stayed almost continuously until the time of his death.

He was cited for meritorious services and gallantry. Killed in action at Soissons on July 20 1918.

The following is the citation: "The Division Commander of the First Division cites the following officers and soldiers for gallantry in action and especially meritorious services: Private Geo. W. Zengel who was killed in action near Soissons July 20, 1918."
