When William Hugh Murphy was born on May 3, 1895, in New Jersey, his father, John, was 49 and his mother, Carrie, was 27. He had one brother and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in Company B, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 25, 1918 and is now buried in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, Union County, New Jersey, USA.
