When Dillard Stokes Pearson was born on January 1, 1893, in Wilkes, North Carolina, his father, Joseph, was 18 and his mother, Nancy, was 29. He had two brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in Company C, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
