Charles Willis Thompson was born on May 29, 1887 in Sparksville, Jackson County, Indiana. He was the son of John F. and Rose (Wolfe) Thompson. He went overseas in June 1917 with Co. B, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He took part in the battles of the Lorraine Sector, Picardy, and Cantigny. He was Killed in Action in the battle of Soissons on July 19, 1918 (at the age of 31) in France and is now buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, USA.
