August Hamm was born on April 12, 1883. He was the son of Herman and Anna Hamm. He entered the military service in Indiana and served in the U.S. Army during Wolrd War I as a Private First Class in Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument (in France) in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument as a Private. He name is also listed on a memorial at the Rockville, Indiana courthouse.
