When James Lennon Payne was born on September 2, 1901, in Hinsdale, Illinois, his father, Jeremiah, was 47 and his mother, Anna, was 25. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 5, 1918 (at the age of 17) in France. Temporarily buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, France, he is now buried in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana, USA.
