Joseph Benson was born on January 28, 1894 in Cokato, Wright County, Minnesota. He was the son of Sakaris Benson, born in Finland, and Anna Cattelasaary, born in Sweden. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Medical Detachment Company, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 (at the age of 24) in France and is now buried in Cokato Finnish Cemetery, Cokato, Wright County, Minnesota, USA. He also has a cenotaph in Victory Memorial Drive, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument.
