When William Aaugust Papka was born on April 23, 1895, in Gary, Lake County, Indiana, his father, John, was 41 and his mother, Sophia, was 36. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
