When Thomas Virgil Stewart was born on October 6, 1893, in Shelburn, Indiana, his father, Irvin, was 33 and his mother, Emily, was 31. He had four brothers and one sister.
Service Record: Enlisted in Company H, 1st Infantry, Indiana National Guard from Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana on 1 Jun 1917. Called to Active Duty and sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi (Hattiesburg) for training and assigned to Company L, 162nd Infantry. Embarked for overseas duty on 11 Jun 1818 and reassigned to Company L, 28th Infantry, 1st Division. PFC Thomas Virgil Stewart gave his life in the line of duty on 20 Jul 1918 during battle in Soissons, France. His body was never recovered or identified and he was listed as "Missing in Action". His name was inscribed on the "Tablets of Missing" at the Memorial Chapel of Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, France. He is also commemorated on the Buzancy monument in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument. His surname is inscribed as Steward.
