When William E. Loran was born on August 25, 1891, in Sterling, Illinois, his father, Michael, was 36 and his mother, Ellen, was 29. He married Bertha E. Johnson on January 27, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on July 21, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument.
