Walter D. Ballard was born on March 30, 1887 in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 9, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He also has a memorial stone located in Covenanter Cemetery, Clarinda, Page County, Iowa, USA. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

AWARD CITATION:
Distinguished-Service Cross: Private, Company B, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. Displaying exceptional initiative and bravery throughout the operations south of Soissons, France, July 18 to 22, 1918, he, with extraordinary heroism on July 21, 1918, with two companions, captured two machine-guns that were causing heavy losses to his company.
