When John Edwin Johansson Johnson was born on October 28, 1894, in Hjälmseryd, Jönköping, Sweden, his father, Johannes, was 28 and his mother, Anna, was 28. He had four brothers and two sisters. He entered the military service in Illinois and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 7, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
