When Herman E. Knute was born on January 21, 1897, in Glidden, Iowa, his father, John, was 46 and his mother, Henrietta, was 37. He had five brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on October 4, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
