When William "Willie" Muehlenweg was born in January 1897, his father, August, was 44 and his mother, Marie, was 35. He had one brother. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company K, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on November 6, 1918 (at the age of 21) and is now buried in Fairview Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Muehlanwag.
