When Leon Ellsworth Goddard was born on November 10, 1898, his father, John, was 31 and his mother, Louisa, was 28. He had one brother and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company L, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was a sharpshooter and ran messages. He was killed by a shrapnel on 17 Oct 1918 in France. He is now buried in Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Shelby County, Iowa, USA.
