Corporal Fred E. Staggs was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Staggs. He was born on February 10, 1901 in Lonoke County, Arkansas. When in infancy he moved with parents to Terre Haute, Indiana. He was working as a laborer when he enlisted in U.S. Regular Army on April 11, 1917. Staggs completed basic training at Jefferson Barracks Military Post near Lemay, Missouri and was assigned to Company B, 18th Infantry. He went overseas early in June, 1917. He was killed in action on October 9, 1918, near Hill No. 240 in the Argonne Forest during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He was buried in the Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France.
