Overaas was born in Oksendal, Norway, in October 1893. He had been in this country about five years, most of the time employed in the logging camps. He was a member of the local lodge of the ”Sons of Norway”. While in Hoquiam he made his home with his sister. He went into the service in the fall of 1917, and after a short stay at camp Lewis, and another stay at camp Mills, he was sent over France in 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 10, 1918 at the age of 24 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
