"When John Ward Matthews was born in June 1895 in Waynesboro, Mississippi, his father, Benjamin, was 33 and his mother, Margaret, was 32. He enlisted in the Army on April 22, 1916 at Columbus Barracks, Ohio. He was sent overseas on June 14, 1917 and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company F, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 8, 1918 and is now buried in Hickery Grove Cemetery, Laurel, Mississippi, USA.
