Welcome H. McNiesh was born in Fox Lake, Wis., on July 23, 1883. He was educated in the Lawrence College, Appleton, Wis., graduated in June, 1912, after which he became a teacher of chemistry. He was married to Miss Hildegarde C. Kreutzer of Appleton, Wis., on August 27, 1912. "Professor McNeish" was a teacher there for a number of years, and went off to fight in WWI. Previous to entering the First Officers' Training Camp at Fort Sheridan, he was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard. Upon receiving his commission he was ordered overseas, sailing in July, 1918, with Company F, 337th Infantry, Eighty-fifth Division, and later transferred to Co. H, I 8th Infantry. He was killed in action while leading his platoon in an attack in the Argonne Forset. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
