When Frank H. Wendland was born on January 13, 1894, in Royal Oak, Michigan, his father, Charles, was 24 and his mother, Henrietta, was 31. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company L, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 4, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Wenland. His name is also listed on a plaque in front of the Royal Oak, Michigan public library.
