Thomas Boyd Speaks was born in 1901 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Peter Speaks and Gillie Lutitia Templeton. He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1917 and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Bugler in Company L, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 4, 1918 in France and is now buried in Smith Chapel Cemetery, Union Grove, Iredell County, North Carolina, USA.
