When Joseph M. Sesterhenn was born on January 8, 1898, in Evanston, Illinois, his father, Michael, was 28 and his mother, Lena, was 25. He had two sisters. Joseph enlisted when he was 19 years of age, on May 5, 1917. He went to Ft. Bliss from Jefferson Barracks and finished his training at Gettysburg, Pa. He sailed in October, reaching France on November 10, 1917. He served during World War I in Company M, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was wounded in action on October 4, 1914 and died in the same evening in the field hospital. He is now buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Northbrook, Cook County, Illinois, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Sesterhoun. Glenview's American Legion Post 166 was named in his honor.
