When Orlie K. McDaniel was born on March 2, 1898, his father, Lee, was 20 and his mother, Colista, was 19. He moved to Newcastle in 1891 and was a Taxi driver before enlisting. He enlisted in U.S. Regular Army on March 1, 1917 and received his training at Camp Harry Jones, Douglas, AZ. He was sent to Columbus, Ohio and was assigned to Company L, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. After three months training in Texas and Arizona, he sailed for France on June 1, 1917 and was assigned to HQ Company, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He participated in battles of Soissons, St. Mihiel and Argonne. He died in a front line hospital on October 7, 1918, after having been gassed in an attack by the Germans in the Argonne on October 2, 1918. His body was initially laid to rest in the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery in France but he was repatriated to the South Mound Cemetery, New Castle, Henry County, Indiana, USA.
