When Henry Oscar Surface was born on December 8, 1890, in Johnson, Indiana, his father, Benjamin, was 31 and his mother, Lucy, was 31. He married Murrell Hamilton on March 26, 1918. He had attended the Center Grove high school and was employed on his father’s farm when the war broke out. He entered the service in September 1917 and went to Camp Taylor then Camp Shelby and sent overseas in June 2018. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in HQ Company, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on November 7, 1918 in France at the age of 27 and is now buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana, USA.
