When Chauncey C. Botkin was born on March 28, 1889, his father, Edgar, was 22 and his mother, Rosa, was 22. He had two sisters. Chauncey was a farmer before entering the military. He entered the service on September 20, 1917 in Winchester, Ind. He was sent to Camp Taylor, KY and was assigned to Company A, 151st Infantry. He was then transferred to Camp Shelby, Miss. and embarked for France on June 11, 1918. He was assigned to Company B, 26th infantry 1st Division and was Killed in Action on October 6, 1918. His memorial headstone is located at Maxville/Woodlawn Cemetery, Maxville, Randolph County, Indiana. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Botkins.
