Garfield Lowery was born in 1894 in North Carolina. Garfield was the eldest child of Alex and Lucy Ann Oxendine Lowery. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company B, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 5, 1918 and is now buried in Cummings Family Cemetery, Pembroke, Robeson County, North Carolina, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Lewyre.
