He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company I, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 3, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Victory Memorial Drive, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Bertlson and ranked as a Private.
