Raymond G. Dankle was born on March 10, 1891 in Carroll County, Iowa. He enlisted at Des Moines on May 8, 1917. He was sent to Fort Logan, Colo., then to Fort Bliss, and sailed for France June 14. He land at St. Nazaire on June 26, and has been in some of the hardest fighting all the way through. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was once before gassed, and for a long time was unable to talk, but later recovered and upon his discharge from the hospital, went back into active service. During the heavy fighting in the Argonne forest in France on October 4, 1918, he was Killed in Action. He is now buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Glidden, Carroll County, Iowa, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but listed in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
