When John Oliver Holt was born on July 8, 1889, in Georgia, his father, Thomas, was 26 and his mother, Emma, was 21. After entering service, Holt was stationed at Camp Devens, Ayer, Massachusetts, for preliminary training. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Machine Gun Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. After arriving overseas, Private Holt was sent to the front, where he was killed in action on October 4, 1918. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his name's middle initial is inscribed as A.
