When Austin Henry Wood was born on February 28, 1898, in Washington, Indiana, his father, Martin, was 41 and his mother, Nancy, was 43. He had two brothers and two sisters. He enlisted in the Army on May 6, 1917. He went overseas in June 1917 and served during World War I as a Private First Class in Battery A, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on October 5, 1918 near Village of Daulny, during Meuse-Argonne Offensive and is now buried in Veale Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington, Daviess County, Indiana, USA.
