When Scott Wilbur Harvey was born on July 29, 1898, in Bedford, Indiana, his father, John, was 37 and his mother, Ida, was 22. He had one brother and one sister. On May 23, 1917 he enlisted in the Indiana National Guard in Bedford. For training he was sent to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., and then to Camp Shelby, Miss., where he was assigned to Company F, 4th Infantry. He was transferred to Battery C, 139th Field Artillery and then transferred to Battery B, 5th Field Artillery, 1st Division. He was promoted to Private First Class on August 5, 1917. He was deployed overseas in June, 1918 where he fought in the battles of Soissons, St Mihiel, Pont-a-Mousson and Argonne Forest. He was killed in action October 6, 1918 during Meuse-Argonne Offensive and is now buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Harvy.
