Philip Livingston Rose was born on July 27, 1894 in New York City, the son of Dr. John Henry Rose and Susan Tartleton (Goldthwaite) Rose. He was a member of the Freshman and Apollo Glee clubs, the University Mandolin Club, took part in dramatics, and belonged to Alpha Delta Phi that time. Until entering service he was employed by the New England Westinghouse Company at Chicopee Falls, Mass. He was a student at the first Pattsburg Training Camp, and shortly after receiving his commission, sailed for France. Upon completing a three months' course at the Saumur Artillery School, he was assigned to Battery D of the 101st Field Artillery, from which he was later transferred to Battery E, 6th Field Artillery. He was Killed in Action on October 5, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
