When Raleigh Duty was born on May 15, 1883, in Tyler, West Virginia, his father, James, was 26 and his mother, Sarah, was 22. He had one brother and two sisters. He entered the military service in California and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Battery A, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on October 15, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
