Hilton Ultimus Brown, Jr. was born on August 9, 1894 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. He was educated in Butler College, a student, newspaper correspondent, poet, and a cartoonist. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in First Officers Training School in August 1917 at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was deployed overseas in September 1917, assigned to Battery D, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on November 3, 1918, near Nouart, France and was awarded the Croix-de-Guerre for bravery. The American Legion Post No. 85, Indianapolis, is named in his honor. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France and also has a cenotaph in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but listed in Company B of his unit.
