William Hopkins Chandler was born on January 9, 1894 in India. His mother was Henrietta Sheldon Rendall Chandler. He entered the military service in New York and commissioned on Aug. 15, 1917 as a 2nd Lieutenant, Field Artillery, OTC, Plattsburg, NY. He was assigned to Battery D, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division and was deployed to Europe on Sept. 9, 1917. He was wounded in action on July 23, 1918, near Soissons, France and was Killed in action on October 6, 1918 at Serieux Farm near Exemont, France. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He was awarded the Silver Star, Cited in General Order # 13, HQ, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, dated Aug 16, 1919, for action on Oct. 5, 1918, during the Meuse - Argonne Offensive and was also awarded the France Crox De Guerre with a star.
