Martin M. Barrows was born on November 30, 1899 in Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont. He was the son of Leonard J. and Harriet M. Durfey Barrows. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Battery D, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on October 10, 1918 in France at the age of 18 and is now buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Borrows.
